Basic Needs Action Team formed in 1996 to determine how to meet the needs of disadvantaged and community members. It was decided that a community-based thrift store should be opened, where the general public could donate their gently used goods for resale.
Basic Needs Inc. of South Washington County applied for and received the IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit status, and Stone Soup Thrift Shop opened on September 7th, 1997.
During 2016, Stone Soup provided goods at no cost to those lacking funds, to purchase household goods, furniture, and clothing. Goods given were valued at $86,755.00, and helped 367 children, 404 adults, community churches, and other agencies. This represented 44% of our inventory given to people in need. We are proud to say that, over the last 20 years, we’ve provided more than ONE MILLION DOLLARS worth of free merchandise to persons in need.
